The gayageum is probably the most well known of all traditional Korean instruments. Perhaps this is due to the special charm of gayageum. While the geomungo is often described as being masculine, the gayageum is definitely feminine, whose twelve strings provide supple and soft tones that are characteristically clear and warm.

Professor Sung Sim-on, born in Seoul in 1949, is one of Korea¡¯s leading gayageum specialists. Prof. Sung received a B.A. and M.A in Korean traditional music from Seoul National University. She was a lecturer at Sangmyung Women¡¯s University, Seonsin Womens University, Chonnam National University, a research fellow at Asian Music Institute, Seoul National University, an exchanged professor at University of Illinois at Urbana Champaign, and a Dean of College of Arts, Chonnam National University. She was a recipient of several awards including commendation of President of Korea as commemoration of Teacher¡¯s Day and Yim Bang-ul Korean Music Award, and Culture and Arts Award of Gwangju City. As a gayageum soloist, she has performed with Seoul Metropolitan Korean Music Orchestra, Gwangju Metropolitan Korean Music Orchestra, and Gwangju Symphony Orchestra. She also gave numerous solo recitals home and abroad. Some of her recitals were held at Carnegie Hall, Sejong Center, National Center for Korean Traditional Performing Arts Hall, Gwangju Culture and Arts Center. She has been invited to perform in the US, Germany, China, U.K. Canada, Taiwan, Singapore, Hawaii, Vietnam, Mongolia, and Australia. Her publications includes Playing Techniques of Gayageum and Its Practice (Seoul: Saegwang Music Publishing), Understanding Gayageum Playing Techniques (Gwangju: Chonnam National University Press), ¡°A Study of Historical Changes of Geomungo Guum: Focused on relationship between gung and dang found in Old Notations,¡± ¡°A Comparative Study on Different Gayageum Sanjo Melodies: Focused on Playing Techniques of Asian Zither Instruments,¡± and ¡°A Study on the Archetype and Variation of Gayageum Sanjo.¡± Her music can be heard on released album entitled Sung Sim-on¡¯s Pungnyu Journey ¥°, ¥± (Seoul: Yesul Gihoeok TOP). Currently she is a professor of gayageum at Korean Music Department, College of Arts, Chonnam National University. As one of the students of gayageum master Kim Juk-pa, currently she is a trainee candidate of Important Intangible Cultural Property No.23 gayageum sanjo. She serves as a counselor of Bitgoeul Mudeung Gayageum Ensemble, committee member of Gwangju Municipal Cultural Property, Jeolla Namdo Provincial Cultural Property, trustee of Asia Zither Musicians¡¯ Association and the society for Korean Traditional Music Promotion, and committee member of Gwangju Municipal Korean Traditional Music Orchestra. She also is a steering committee member of Jeolla namdo Provincial Korean Music Orchestra and Jeong Yul Seong International Music Festival.
