An Exploration of Korean Folk Beliefs
(Hanguk Minsok Sinangui Tamgu)
Rhie Jong-chul, Minsokwon, 2009, 312 pages
ISBN 978-89-5638-806-9
Civilization flows with time. Siberia, Mongolia, Korea and Japan once became one and then separated over time. This book argues that folk beliefs are the reservoir of culture that ebbs and flows. Korean ancestors had the wisdom to bring natural beings into everyday life. They worshipped the god of the heaven and the god of the earth. In every village, there was also a kitchen spirit, a village spirit and a demarcation sign, which marked the border around the village from the outside. Trees, stones and rivers divided the areas of life and embraced the traces of time. By generating symbolic objects out of stones and trees that could be obtained easily and regarding natural objects as the subject of worship, our ancestors turned the nature around them into objects of belief and prayer. Therefore, this book is a comprehensive report on the lost beliefs of Korea. As a cultural anthropologist, the author focuses on the grassroots beliefs deeply embedded in Korean life. In particular, he analyzes beoksu, or jangseung (totem pole), the space surrounding it and related rituals in order to examine the inner workings of the village community beliefs that are widely spread throughout East Asia. In addition, he widens his scope to Japan, Mongolia, Siberia, Indonesia and the South Pacific to examine the images of community deities in other parts of the world. The rarely documented side of human history lives and breathes in this book.
